Choosing a baby gift to take to a baby shower can be difficult. Some women spend hours shopping trying to decide on a gift. Should it be pink, blue or yellow? Does the mom already have a room full of teddy bears? Would your friend appreciate a baby journal? What's the child's room theme? Baby Shower Detective Work

When you get an invitation to a shower, there are a lot of questions that arise. The best way to handle these questions is to do a little sleuthing before the shower. If possible, become a baby shower detective and see if you can gather some information that will help you choose the ideal gift.

* Does the mother know if the baby is a boy or girl or does she prefer unisex clothes? - Knowing the mom's favorite colors and the sex of the child makes shopping a lot easier.

* What are the other guests bringing? - If you know any of the other invitees then call them and ask what they are bringing. Keep a list and you will know what baby gifts would be duplicates.

* What does the mom need? - Baby showers are held for a very good reason besides having a party. They are a way for a new mother to defray some of the expenses associated with a new child. If you know the mother well, or know someone close to the mother, then you can simply ask what is needed.

* Is the mother going to need anything special? - Some women have philosophies about raising a child. For example, if she does not approve of children watching videos then you may want to buy children's music or books instead. If she believes in colorful stimulation to enhance child development then you would shop for the brightest colored baby blankets sold.

* What does the mother want? - Needs and wants are two very different things as parents have to tell their teenagers all the time. Yet this is a celebration of a new life whether it's the first or the eighth child. You want to give the mother something she needs and wants.
